When I was an English major at Liberty University, the most interesting thing about literature was realizing how that art form was affected by certain points in history. These are the kinds of connections I strive to instill in my students. A person may know a little bit about a certain subject, but could be missing all of the details that make that little part really interesting. This is part of my job as a teacher; to encourage a student to truly learn and grasp a topic, not just memorize a definition. I have tutored people of all ages in many different subjects, ranging from English to history. By teaching such a wide range of people, I have gained great experience in learning what it takes for a student to understand a topic and truly "get it."Connecting with my students on a personal level makes it easier for me to help them and for them to open up to me as well. Many students complain that what they learn in the classroom will never help them in real life. To prevent this discouraging mentality, I try to associate real world applications to what I teach. This strategy makes it easier for the student to grasp concepts and may encourage them to learn more about something.
